Main Street Moves: Quick Facts & FAQs
1. Is Main Street reopening to cars?

Not yet. No final decision has been made.

Staff returns to Council on September 16, 2025, with more information.

Council will decide whether to:

  • Reopen to vehicles on November 3, or

  • Continue the closure and advance a fully pedestrian vision.

2. What happened with the Pedestrian Mall Law?

Council adopted a resolution of intent in April 2025 but did not approve the Pedestrian Mall Law model.

Over 50% of property owners objected, stopping the process under state law.

The City must wait one year before restarting that process.

The closure continues under the Vehicle Code for now.

3. What about the Vehicle Code closure?

The City can continue the closure under California Vehicle Code Section 21101(a)(1), but a pending lawsuit may affect that ability.

The Pedestrian Mall Law offers a more secure legal structure for long-term closure and resolving legal challenges.

4. What if I’m a business owner with a parklet?

The City is updating its Parklet Design Guidelines with pre-approved designs and a streamlined permitting process.

  • If Council reopens the street, current parklets must be removed by October 15

  • If Council continues the closure, parklets must be removed and/or replaced with compliant ones by January 26

In either case, existing parklets will be temporarily removed to allow right-of-way improvements and construction of new, code-compliant parklets.
